Milestone 1 - Project Focus
The Problem
Energy and resources are continuously being consumed in huge quantities to fuel the purchase of new consumer goods. Meanwhile, in the very same towns, a large amount of high quality, gently used items are filling both re-sale stores and landfills.
Project Scope
We're hoping to expand the consumption of used goods.
Stakeholders
- Our primary stakeholders are the community members, who by simple force of habit continue to consume global resources unsustainably.
- Individuals, who through no fault of their own lack a sense of community, especially with respect to what it physically has to offer. Individuals also stand to gain from not having to buy new for themselves what their neighbors already own and no longer want.
- Finally, our planet Earth has much to gain from reduced demand for consumer goods, from reduced production to a reduction of consumer waste.
Our Approach
Within the framework of contextual inquiry, our first step will be to conduct research into what the barriers to buying used items are. We will try to determine the issues and current work being done in this problem space in order to better understand what solutions are needed. Once we have a good understanding of the needs of all stakeholders, the design process can begin. Iteratively designing and re-interviewing potential users will lead us to a solution we hope will satisfy the needs of all involved.
